If you have installed Mac OSX Java Update 4 and clicking the Launch button opens a text file in a text editor instead of the application, please open a Terminal under Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal and type or copy/paste the following command on one line:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Afterwards, please try to re-launch the activity.

Alt-1: Load a .txt file from disk into the application and
assign the dictionary to Grade 1 (Uncontracted) words.
Alt-2: Load a .txt file from disk into the application and
assign the dictionary to Grade 2 (Contracted) words.
Shift-1: Save the current Grade 1 (Uncontracted) dictionary loaded in the
application as a .txt file.
Shift-2: Save the current Grade 2 (Contracted) dictionary loaded in the
application as a .txt file.
Alt-Q Quit the application

Alt-N: Start a new word. This
operation disables the timer, generates a new word, shows the dot
pattern as text in a text field.
Alt-W: Show/Hide the current word being quizzed in letters.
Alt-D: Show/Hide (Toggle) the dot pattern of the word being
quizzed.
