  • Session 10: Preparing Tests, Drills, and Exercises

Complete documentation for tests, drillls and exercises is provided in Rule 13 of the Formats code.

One of the main goal in transcribing testing materials is to do so in a manner that doesn't provide more information to the student with a visual impairment than to his or her sighted peer! The Code states very clearly that "the chance for errors to occur increases with each alteration made to the print text", and that this is particularly problematic when a textbook is being transcribed "by committee", i.e., by a number of braillists.

As a transcriber you should understand that there are fundamentally two types of formats in preparing tests: bound materials and expendable materials. Rule 13, §9 states that the preparation of expendable materials is the responsibility of the classroom teacher (or the sponsoring agency), but there are good guidelines in the Code for preparing expendable materials. Likewise, some bound materials (especially items such as standardized tests) must be formatted following the specific guidelines of the issuing organization. The transcriber needs to be aware of these restrictions and transcribe the materials accordingly.
