12. Initial-letter Contractions

1. Are subject to the general rules for the use of contractions.

2. May be used as parts of words only when they retain their original sounds.

3. Special rules for certain part-word contractions:
   1. The contractions one is used whenever the letters o and n fall in the same syllable, regardless of the pronunciation.

   2. The contraction some is used only when it retains the sound of the word some, and where its letters form a complete syllable in the base word.

   3. The contraction part is used except where the prefix par is followed by any form of the word take.
